Murphy Oil kicks off exciting new partnership with Edgewood Elementary with $5,000 check presentation and commitment to support student learning

Recently, Murphy Oil partnered with Edgewood Elementary to provide the school with continued support throughout the school year.

The company recently relocated their headquarters to the Spring Branch community and were eager to get involved in volunteering activities to benefit students.

“We are so grateful to Murphy Oil for their commitment and strategic support of Edgewood Elementary. A key tenet of SBISD’s Good Neighbor program is the belief that our schools and our communities are inextricably linked, with each dependent on the success of the other,” said Abby Walker, SBISD Director of Community Engagement. “We look forward to recognizing Murphy Oil as a Good Neighbor, as the gifts of their time, talent and treasure will have an incredible impact on Edgewood students, staff and families this year and the years to come.”

Murphy Oil will be participating in Reading Roundup, a Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation program, that utilizes Murphy Oil employees to deliver high-quality read alouds in first and second grade classrooms at Edgewood. The company has also committed to sponsoring a staff appreciation luncheon for Edgewood’s more than 80 staff members to ensure they feel valued and supported.

"Murphy Oil is excited to partner with SBISD and provide support to Edgewood Elementary throughout the school year, both monetarily and through employee volunteerism. Giving back to our communities is a key tenet of who we are," said Maria Martinez, Vice President, Human Resources and Administration.

In the second semester, the company will be hosting a book drive, which will provide Edgewood students with a new or gently used book from a wish list prepared by the school to help them build their home library. They will also be providing students taking the STAAR test with a nutritious snack bag and an encouraging good luck card.

“Murphy Oil’s support of Edgewood students will not only give them a positive, healthy boost, but will also let them know the community is cheering them on!” added Walker.

To kick off the partnership and in addition to the established plan, Murphy Oil surprised Edgewood with a $5,000 check to complete fundraising for an audio project that had yet to be fully funded.

Jessica Tejada, Edgewood principal, was grateful and excited to receive the donation and to have Murphy Oil as a partner.

“The donation will support our Parent Teacher Association’s fundraising efforts to get a working audio system in our cafeteria,” said Tejada. “Having the audio system will allow our students to shine even greater than they already do during their winter program and other events. We are grateful to Murphy Oil as they are making our students’ dreams come true!”
